MC vs Poway: Homecoming Showdown | Megan Beebe
With football season and fall weather building excitement around the world, high school students are getting pumped for homecoming dances. However, not every dance can live up to students’ expectations.
MC and Poway, two competing high schools, both hosted homecomings that stimulated debate over which dance was better. This conversation concluded with the statement that Poway’s homecoming was superior to MC’s.
Poway freshman Riley Castillo, attended both homecoming dances and had two quite different experiences to comment on. He noticed how the atmosphere of both dances greatly impacted their preferability.
“The MC homecoming was super boring and there was nothing to do other than go in the mosh pit, but Poway’s had fish to look at and a deck where you could hangout and a silent disco and dj,” Castillo said.
MC freshman Leena Venkatesh, also attended both dances and found that Poway’s dance had a better appeal due to the location.
“MC’s homecoming was fun, but it got boring pretty fast so I only stayed for an hour. Poway’s was really fun, probably because it was at an aquarium and had a lot of food and it just had a better setup,” Venkatesh said.
Due to the many flaws of MC’s dance, Venkatesh thought of ways that MC’s ASB could improve the function in years to come.
“I think that if MC’s dance was at a venue it would’ve been a lot more fun. Also, the mosh pit was so violent and there were people getting trampled and pushed, where as the Poway one was more calm but still fun,” Venkatesh said.
Castillo also had a few suggestions of elements that could be tweaked.
“Poway’s homecoming just had better energy and there was more stuff to do, so if MC’s dance had more activities or places to go, it would’ve been more fun,” Castillo said.
Despite Castillo being a loyal advocate for Poway, he found a few things that he liked about MC’s dance.
“There were free root beer floats which was nice and there were also two photo booth areas which was cool,” Castillo said.
Overall, Venkatesh agreed that MC has potential at hosting a more lively dance in future years.
“I really think that having the dance at a venue would automatically make it so much more fun,” Venkatesh said.
Castillo also agreed that MC’s dance can be more appealing if changes are made.
“I feel like having things to look at and more places to hangout would make the MC dance more fun, especially since everyone was in mosh pit and it started getting pretty violent,” Castillo said.
With the feedback given from students, there is hope that these opinions will reach the notice of MC’s ASB and, therefore, make next year’s homecoming dance gratifying.
